Maths
Our aim at Stapleford Abbotts Primary Academy, is for all of our children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice. Our pupils will develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
All children will be given the opportunity to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, developing an argument and using mathematical language. Pupils will solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication.
Our chosen curriculum, the Mathematics Mastery programme, supports children to develop a secure understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts, enabling them to apply their subject knowledge to a variety of contexts.
The programme gives all pupils the opportunity to develop Conceptual Understanding, Language and Communication and Mathematical Thinking in every lesson in order to become confident problem solvers.
In every lesson, through the six-part lesson structure, children will have opportunities to solve problems and represent different concepts by using concrete, pictorial and abstract approaches. They will have lots of opportunities to talk, learn and use precision vocabulary, explain and justify their mathematical thinking as they are taught to organise, compare, look for patterns and generalise.
An important aspect of Mathematics Mastery is the daily Maths Meeting, which is used to consolidate key areas of mathematics in your class. Maths Meetings provide an opportunity to teach and revise 'general knowledge maths' which may not explicitly be covered during the maths lesson, and also allows the daily integration of maths into the surrounding environment. This means that pupils are practising concepts and skills on a regular basis, meaning they are continually building on their mastery of these concepts.
This mastery approach delivers student success through empowered teaching and supports our school vision of Inspiring Success for All.
Assessment in Maths
Each child from Year 1- 6 are part of a club (1-99) Each club is associated with number bonds or times tables. Children regularly practise the skills associated with their club ready for a test each week. If they are successful in their test, they move to the next club.
Teachers analyse the NTS test every term. They identify some objectives from the test that the class need some additional support or focus on. These are then practised daily as part of their Maths Meetings.
Every lesson begins with a ‘Do Now’ section - opportunities for pupils to retrieve and consolidate prior knowledge before introducing new learning.
As mathematicians, we are always looking for ways our Maths can help us in the real world.
